Delhi terms tender notice a ‘misunderstanding’

Inquired by the Bangladesh government, New Delhi has clarified its position over a tender notice on its ministry website for a feasibility study on a proposed container port in Narayanganj which was unknown to Dhaka.

“We received the mail [seeking clarification] on Tuesday and clarified the matter on Wednesday,” a senior official at the Indian High Commission in Dhaka told UNB over phone Thursday.

She said it was a misunderstanding and nothing serious, and hoped that it would not have any negative impact on Bangladesh-India friendly relations.

On May 10, the Indian external affairs ministry posted an advertisement on its website inviting bids for “Techno-Commercial feasibility study for setting up an Inland Container Port at Narayanganj, Bangladesh.”

Seeking a clarification how it had happened, the Bangladesh foreign ministry sent a letter to its Indian counterpart on Monday through the High Commission.

The government also asked the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi to inform the government back home how the tender notice was published without consultation with Bangladesh.
