A Dhaka court Wednesday sentenced seven people to rigorous life imprisonment for killing a boy named Shaheen during a robbery in the city’s Uttara on June 29, 2007.
The convicts are Abu Taher alias Tornado Babu, Raju Khondoker alias China Raju, Shohag, Nasim Babu, Hossain, Adib Mahmood Dipto, Rubel and Manju, who has been absconding since the incident.
The court also fined each of them Tk50,000 or extra three months in prison. The court also sentenced Nasim Kabir Babu to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for robbing a mobile phone.
Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions’ Judge Md Akhtaruzzaman delivered the verdict in the presence of the accused, who were later sent to jail.
According to the case details, on June 29, 2007, Aminul Islam Shaheen was killed at Uttara when he was on his way to buy blood for his hospitalised father. He was stabbed and robbed of Tk5,000 and a mobile phone. Shaheen’s father later died when he heard about his son’s death.
Uttara police filed a robbery and murder case against the accused in this connection.
The charge sheet against the seven accused was placed on February 11, 2008, and the court framed charges against them on September 15, 2008. The verdict was passed after the court cross-examined 17 prosecution witnesses. Five of the accused confessed to killing Shaheen.
