In recent years, the use of bamboo platforms in the cultivation of vegetables has gained popularity
among the farmers in Gaibandha. This new method of cultivation had given the farmers desired levels of production, as well as substantial financial returns.
Sources from the Department of Agriculture Extension said hundreds of farmers of all the seven upazilas of the district have built bamboo platforms this year.
Through this method, over 3,000 hectares of land have been
used this year for vegetable
cultivation by different unions, including Tarapur, Chhaparhati,
Laxmipur, Ghagoa, Dhaperhat, Muktinagar, Erendabari, Palashbari and Mohimaganj.
Crops production specialist of the DAE Golam Mostafa said in the past the straw used in the traditional vegetable cultivation method got rotten within very short time and caused spots on the vegetables.
Deputy Director of DAE Mir Abdur Razzak said the farmers have been introduced to this new system to enable them keep up with the changes in climatic conditions and to meet up the growing demand for high quality vegetables.
