Heroes in our midst

Update : 23 May 2013, 08:25 AM

The horrific experience of the Savar tragedy is still fresh in our minds. The death toll has risen over 1000 and words fail to describe the agony and grief of the victims. After the collapse of the building, we saw the valiant efforts of the common people in rescuing and rehabilitating the injured.

More importantly, the nation observed the generous and benevolent nature of some people whom we should call heroes of our time.

Often, we see the hero in movies who champions truth, serves others and establishes justice. But, a real life hero is not as easy to come by.

When a critical situation arises in the nation, real heroes show up. With their determination, courage and perseverance, they set an example for everyone around them. They do so not for reward or recognition, but only to help others. Likewise the Rana Plaza tragedy also introduced us to many heroes, who had up until then been hiding in plain sight. Among them, three names were much talked by the people & media.

First of all, the name which comes to mind is Dr Enamur Rahman, principal of Enam Medical College, who, along with his staff, teachers and students immediately responded for the treatment of thousands of people free of cost. Primarily, Enam Medical College provided treatment to 1500-1600 injured people.

It was an overwhelming number for any hospital. But, Dr Enam was able to manage the situation despite a lack of adequate medicine and necessary equipment. He extended his helping hand to save lives.

Moreover, he personally donated a handsome amount for buying medicine and equipment for the united effort that saved many lives. Dr.Enam has set an example of humanity and compassion. He is not a mere doctor but also a lion-hearted man.

Secondly, Mohammad Ejajuddin Ahmed Kaikobad, a volunteer rescue worker, who sustained serious burn injuries while trying to salvage a trapped RMG worker from under the rubble. He later died in Singapore while undergoing treatment.

Lastly, Omar Faruque Babu, a young rescuer who was a mechanic, ignored own safety and involved himself in the dangerous rescue operation. He managed to rescue more than 30 persons alive. Unfortunately, this hero suffered a massive nervous breakdown and died in hospital. These heroes uphold the very idea that we are created as social, communal beings and must always help our fellow man.

When we live by this credo, only then can we claim to be human beings. These three men have ignored their own interests and fought for the betterment of others.

In doing so, two of them have already met with their deaths.

It is impossible to find a way to show our gratitude to these men, their contribution was invaluable and the lessons that we should learn from their example countless.

From the bottom of hearts we pledge that we will never forget them. Expressing deep condolence to the bereaved families, we pray for the eternal peace of their souls. They will never really die, heroes live forever.
