Tuesday’s repertoire features Oscar winning films

The third-day of the ongoing film festival organised by Dhaka University Film Society (DUFS) features two Academy Award winning films in the “Foreign Language” category and two more worldwide critically acclaimed movies. Tuesday’s films are “Lincoln,” “A Separation,” “The Lives of Others” and “The City of Gods” which will be screened on 10am, 1pm, 4pm and 7pm respectively.

“Lincoln” is a 2012 American historical drama film directed and produced by Steven Spielberg, starring Daniel Day-Lewis as United States President Abraham Lincoln. The film is based in part on Doris Kearns Goodwin's biography of Lincoln, and covers the final four months of Lincoln's life, focusing on the President's efforts in January 1865 to have the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution passed by the United States House of Representatives. Daniel Day-Lewis received “Best Actor” award at the 85th Academy Award Ceremony.

“A Separation” A Separation is a 2011 Iranian drama film written and directed by Asghar Farhadi. It won the “Academy Award for Best Foreign Language” Film in 2012 along with many other awards from across the globe. A married couple is faced with a difficult decision – to improve the life of their child by moving to another country or to stay in Iran and look after a deteriorating parent who has Alzheimer's disease.

“The Lives of Others” is a 2006 German thriller film, marking the feature film debut of filmmaker Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. It won the 2006 “Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.” In 1984 East Berlin, an agent of the secret police, conducting surveillance on a writer and his lover, finds himself becoming increasingly absorbed by their lives.

“City of God” is a 2002 Brazilian crime drama film directed by Fernando Meirelles. Two boys growing up in a violent neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro take different paths: one becomes a photographer, the other a drug dealer.
