A forth class worker of Jagannath University was stabbed to death on the campus yesterday. The deceased was Kamal Hossain, 22, a daily basis worker of JnU Registrar office, originally from Chandpur.
Witnesses and campus sources said, Iqbal Hossain, 35, general secretary of JnU fourth class worker association, had an emotional involvement with Sumi Akhtar, wife of Harun-or-Rashid, chemistry department worker of the university. Iqbal and Sumi used to meet each other secretively, which Kamal came to know about.
Iqbal threatened Kamal and told him that if the matter came out, he would be fired. Later, Iqbal called Kamal and asked to meet him on the second floor of Abakash Bhaban of the campus at 10am.
As soon as Kamal arrived, Iqbal stabbed him with a knife. Anwar, a former assistant Imam of JnU central mosque, rushed Kamal to Sumon Medical. With his condition deteriorating, Kamal was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at 12:30pm.
Abu Bakkar Siddique, officer-in-charge of Kotowali police station, said they have visited the spot, recovered the weapon and arrested Iqbal soon after the incident. They also detained Harun and his wife Sumi for interrogation.
A murder case has been filed with the police station and the body was sent to DMCH morgue for post mortem examination, he added.
Prof Mijanur Rahman, vice-chancellor of the university, told the Dhaka Tribune that those found guilty of wrongdoing would face consequences.
The university authorities have already formed a five-member inquiry committee, headed by Law Faculty Dean Prof. Ali Akkas and asked it to file report in a week.
Upon preliminary information, the authorities have temporarily suspended the job of Iqbal Hossain.
