The Bhomra land customs station in the district was declared a full-fledged land port on Saturday in the wake of demand by businessmen, says UNB.
Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan made the announcement at a function here at noon.
“With the completion of Padma Bridge, this port will turn into the country’s main commercial land port increasing trade with Kolkata. The port users will have all the necessary facilities,” he said.
The minister said 25 acres of land will be acquired further for the development of the country’s 18th land port. The Bhomra land customs station was inaugurated on May 25, 1996.
Presided over by chairman of Bangladesh Land Port Authority M Moiz Uddin Ahmed, the function was addressed, among others, Mujibur Rahman, MP.
Satkhira district Awami League president Engineer Mujibur Rahman MP, District Administrator Munsur Ahmed, Sadar upazila parishad chairman Najrul Islam, Satkhira municipality mayor MA Jalil, Deputy Commissioner Dr M Anwar Hossain Hawlader, Police Super Asaduzzaman were among others present on the occasion.
Bhomra duty station was established in 1996. After a long 17 years, shipping minister Shahjahan Khan inaugurated it as a complete land port which includes two warehouses, pen yard, weighbridge scale, office building, power house etc.
