Met office warns to expected landslides and rainfall

Landslide may occur at places in Chittagong division’s hilly regions due to heavy rainfall induced by the cyclonic storm, Mahasen.

A special Met office bulletin said Mahasen moved to the north bay and its adjoining west central bay at 9pm Wednesday, roughly 635km southwest of Chittagong port, 580km southwest of Cox’s Bazar port and 515km south southwest of Mongla port.

The bulletin also added that the storm is likely to intensify and move in a north- northeasterly direction. It predicted landfall in between Patuakhali (Khepupara)-Teknaf coast near Chittagong by Thursday morning.

The sea will remain very rough near its centre and the storms peripherial squally wind has started affecting coastal regions. Maximum sustained wind speed within 54 kms of the storm centre is about 62 kph rising to 90 kph in gusts.

Maritime ports of Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar have been advised to keep hoisted danger signal number seven. The danger warning is also applicable for coastal districts Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Chandpur, Bhola, Borguna, Patuakhali, Barisal and their offshore islands and chars.

Mongla port was told to keep hoisted danger signal five and coastal districts of Pirojpur, Jhalakathi, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars are under the same danger level.

The Met report also warned of a tidal surge 8-10 feet above normal in Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Chandpur, Barguna, Bhola, Patuakhali, Barisal, Pirojpur, Jhalakathi, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars.

As the storm passes through, gusts of 90-100kph along with heavy and very heavy rainfall is expected for coastal districts Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Chandpur, Barguna, Patuakhali, Barisal, Bhola, Pirojpur, and their offshore islands and chars.

The coastal districts of Jhalakathi, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars are likely to experience wind speed up to 80-90 kph in gusts/ squalls with heavy to very falls.

All fishing boats, trawlers and marine vessels over North Bay have been advised to remain in shelter until further notice.
