Mahasen turns into land depression

Maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Mongla have been advised to lower cautionary signal to three as the cyclone Mahasen the cyclonic storm Mahasen has turned into a land depression and lies over bordering Feni and Khagrachari in Bangladesh and Tripura in India.

A special bulletin by Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) at 4pm says the cyclone weakened by giving precipitation, moved northeastwards and crossed Noakhali-Chittagong coast at 4pm and lay over Sitakunda, Feni, Khagrachari region of the country and adjoining Tripura of India as a land depression.

It is likely to move northeasterly direction further inland and weaken gradually by giving precipitation. Under its influence steep pressure gradient lies over north bay. Squally weather may continue over north bay, coastal regions of Bangladesh and the maritime ports.

Maritime ports of Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar have been advised to lower danger signal number seven but instead hoist local cautionary signal no three (r) three.

Maritime port of Mongla has been advised to lower danger signal number five but instead hoist local cautionary signal no Three (r) three.

The signal at Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar seaports was seven and that at Mongla was five till 3pm Bangladesh standard time.

All fishing boats, trawlers and marine vessels over the north Bay had been advised to remain in shelter till Thursday noon.

However, according to UNB repors, The delivery of goods at Chittagong port resumed on Thursday afternoon.

Port secretary Syed Farhad Uddin said the delivery of goods from different shades of the port resumed around 4pm.

He, however, said the loading and unloading of goods at the port remained halted as the ships were staying at the outer anchorage.

The port secretary said they lowered the ‘alert-3’ and instead issued ‘alert-2’ at the port.

Meanwhile, the activities at Shah Amanat International Airport will resume on Friday morning.

Squadron leader Rabiul Alam, airport manager of the airport, said they have started replacing various apparatus removed fearing destruction from the cyclone. “We hope to resume the activities at the airport tomorrow (Friday) morning.”

Weakened further and bearing down on Tripura of India as a land depression on Thursday afternoon, Cyclone ‘Mahasen’ killed at least five people in three districts during its morning fury.The deaths were reported from Barguna, Bhola and Patuakhali districts where the tropical storm also damaged several hundred houses.Earlier, the cyclone made a landfall in Bangladesh through Khepupara coast of Patuakhali in the morning. Later, it passed over Feni and Noakhali regions at noon.
