BCL men ransack police station

Several members of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the pro-government student organisation, attacked and ransacked Kishoreganj sadar police station on Tuesday night.

Police say Shafiqul Gani Dali, joint convener of Kishoreganj Gurudayal Government College Chhatra League, attacked the station with a group of BCL activists because he was prevented from entering the station to supply food for two arrested drug dealers.

The dealers Shafiqul Amin and Mahbub Hasan were turned in by the narcotics department on Tuesday morning, along with a haul of Phensedyl and yaba tablets. Around 9pm Tuesday night, Dali arrived with food for them, but was denied entry by duty constable Joinal Abedin.

Dali went away but returned with a group of men who promptly attacked the station. The policemen in the station fought back, causing panic in the surrounding area, which is a marketplace. The BCL men vandalised a police pickup van.

Although the policemen managed to catch two of the miscreants, a group of Awami League leaders led by MA Afzal, district AL’s acting general secretary, later talked the station into releasing them.

M Hammad Hossain, the station’s officer-in-charge, said the two had been caught as “suspects” and after a “parley” with the AL leaders, they were released pending investigation.

A general diary was filed on the incident, he added.
