RCC to launch City University

Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC)is going to launch “Rajshahi City University” in the metropolis with the aim of expanding scope for higher education.

After getting approval from the local government ministry, AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, Mayor of RCC and Portfolio Chairman of Board of Studies of the proposed university, handed over all documents to Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid at his office in Dhaka on Sunday for getting permission from the education ministry.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid lauded the initiative and assuredall possible cooperation in implementing the project.

Speaking on the occasion Mayor Liton said that the university would be established only for higher quality education. Only skilled, experienced and competent teachers will be appointed for the benefit of students.

"We expect the foreign students will come to the university to acquire knowledge", he said.

The mayor added that around 1,260 students will get a chance for admission in 12 departments under five faculties at the initial stage and the number of students will increase to 5,000 in phases. There will be about 103 teachers.

"This is not about any commercial interest, the initiative has been taken to enhance the educational privileges in the city", he asserted.

Prof Kayesh Uddin, Prof Dr Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan and Prof Anisur Rahman were appointed Vice-chancellor, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Treasurer respectively for the proposed university.

Among others, VC Prof Kayesh Uddin, Prof Mushfique Ahmed of Rajshahi University and RCC Secretary Abdus Salam were present at the document- handing ceremony.
