18 school buildings in sorry state in Chandpur

Update : 06 May 2013, 03:43 AM

A total of 18 government primary school buildings in Sadar upazila of Chandpur are in a run-down state.

The ramshackle school buildings, which have been in a state of disrepair for the last few years but are still in use, may collapse at any moment causing disaster.

According to official sources, there are a total of 175 primary schools at the upazila.

Of them, 38 are registered and community schools, which are now nationalised. The rest are government primary schools.

Soon after the Savar tragedy, the principals and the managing committees of the institutions conducted a survey to document buildings in an extremely vulnerable condition.

As a result, the students now have to attend classes in fear said sources.

Sadar Upazila Education Officer Md Mosaddek Hossain paid official visits to the schools and found the school buildings in too shabby a state to run academic activities normally.

Meanwhile, the authorities have declared two of the school buildings ‘risky and vulnerable to collapse’.

Classes of these schools are being held outside the risky structures.

The teachers and students are in constant fear as if the buildings will fall down upon them right now, added the sources.

Upazila Education Officer Md Mosaddek Hossain said a list of the dilapidated buildings has already been submitted to the upazila office of the Education Engineering Department for urgent measures to be taken.
