PM mourns loss of lives in Savar building collapse

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed deep shock at the loss of lives and properties in a tragic incident of building collapse in Savar today, BSS reported.

On the very onset of her speech at the inauguration ceremony of first ever Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) train service at Kamalapur Railway Station here today, she announced the news of the tragic incident with grief.

"It's unfortunate that bad news hunt us every time when we try to be delighted with any good news," she said mentioning the concurrent of the building-collapse and inauguration of the city's Demu commuter train service on the same day.

The prime minister said many people could manage to escape when a crack was found in the building, but scores of garment workers and employees were trapped inside believed to be dead.

She said the army and fire fighters rushed to the spot to conduct rescue operation with mobilization of the medical teams for treatment of the injured persons.

State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Jahangir Kabir Nanak, local parliament members Towhid Murad Jong and Aslamul Haq were sent to the spot to coordinate the rescue operation, she said.

She requested the Leader of the Opposition to call off the ountrywide hartal to facilitate the relatives of the dead and injured persons to arrive Dhaka from different parts of the country to take care of their nears and dears.

PM's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said the prime minister asked the Bangladesh Army and local administration for uninterrupted rescue operation and engage full strength to rescue the persons trapped inside.

She also asked the authorities concerned for taking necessary measures for proper treatment of the injured persons.

Sheikh Hasina conveyed profound sympathy to the members of the bereaved families and prayed for eternal peace of the departed souls.
