Journos demand Mahmudur’s release

Journalists on Tuesday alleged that the arrest of Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman and the sealing off its printing press was illegal.    “The government has unlawfully arrested Mahmudur Rahman and sealed off its printing press. They’ve arrested him as he worked for establishing democracy and human rights in Bangladesh,” said Ruhul Amin Gazi, president of a faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalist (BFUJ).   Addressing a rally in front of the Jatiya Press Club, he said Mahmudur stood for the oppressed people and unmasked the ‘atheist’ bloggers.   BFUJ and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) organised the protest rally demanding the release of Mahmudur Rahman and reopening of its sealed off printing press.   The organisers said they will also observe a sit-in at the same venue from 10 am to 2 pm tomorrow (Wednesday).   Police raided the printing press of the daily Amar Desh in the city’s Tejgaon area on Thursday night (Apr 11) and sealed off it hours after its acting editor Mahmudur Rahman was taken on a 13-day remand following his arrest in three cases
