The BNP-led 18-party alliance will stage a protest rally in the city on Thursday to press home its various demands, including the release of the top opposition leaders and resignation of the “failed” government.
The rally which will be held in front of the BNP’s Naypaltan central office is also meant for protesting the government’s failures and widespread killing of people across the country, and returning all disappeared opposition leaders, including M Elias Ali, and restoration of the caretaker government system.
BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain announced the programme after a meeting at his party Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office on Tuesday’s afternoon.
Mosharraf, who chaired the meeting, said: “We (18-party) have been on tough agitations. In this situation, more shutdowns were supposed to be announced, but we’ve decided to hold the protest rally instead of hartal as we’ve respect for all religions.”
However, an alliance leader who attended the meeting preferring anonymity, said the alliance may go for another spell of 36-hour countrywide hartal on Monday and Tuesday.
Leaders of the opposition alliance attended the meeting that started at about 3.45pm.
