Update : 09 Apr 2013, 11:31 AM

Unknown criminals hacked a buet student in his dormitory room yesterday morning.

Victim Arif Rahman Dip, 21, a third year student of mechanical engineering and a member of the convener’s committee of the buet unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

According to witnesses, four youths hacked him with sharp weapons in his room of Kobi Nazrul Islam Hall around 11am. Though they could not be recognised, Arif’s friends suspect members of Islami Chhatra Shibir or Hefazat-e-Islami for the incident.

Peejuskanti Mitra, a doctor of dmch, said Arif was shifted to the intensive care unit as his condition deteriorated. There were two deep injuries in his head, and his left eye was almost gouged out while some bones on the head got fractured. Fifty stitches were required to fix his wounds, the doctor said.

Police recovered a bag and a cleaver in front of the hall. They detained Zakir Hossain, 40, a guard of the hall, for interrogation.

Some 60 friends of Arif blocked Polashi Road from 6:30pm, demanding arrest and punishment to the attackers.

Nazrul Islam, vice-chancellor of buet said, the authorities will form a probe committee to investigate the incident.
