The service price has been set at Tk157.50

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has launched the much-awaited mobile number portability (MNP) service on a trial basis.

“Although the service is currently being run on a trial basis, users will be able to make full use of the service,” acting BTRC chairman Md Jahurul Haque said at a press briefing held at its IEB Bhaban office on Monday.

He said this service will increase competition in the telecom industry and force operators to provide quality service to customers.

The MNP service price has been set at Tk158, including a service and SIM replacement charge. The service allows a subscriber to change their telecom carrier while retaining the same phone number.

Breaking down the price structure of the service, Jahurul explained that it will take Tk50 to switch operators, along with 15% VAT.

“Moreover, customers will have to pay an additional Tk100, making the final charge Tk 157.50,” he added.

Infozillion Teletech BD Ltd Managing Director Mabroor Hossain said 20 people have already used the service and migrated to different operators since they rolled it out.

Upon applying for the MNP, the operator will change within 72 hours. However, customers will have to wait an additional 90 days before being able to switch operators again.

Speaking at the event, Robi Axiata Limited Vice President Ekram Kabir said they have already begun to provide the MNP service to customers.

Licenses for the service were awarded to the Bangladesh-Slovenian consortium Infozillion Teletech BD Ltd in November 2017.

The service was set to launch in August, but it had to be pushed back to October due to technical and regulatory complications.

Previously, on Wednesday, Post, Telecommunication and Information Technology Minister Mustafa Jabbar said the service will officially launch  once feedback from the trial run is received.
