'We are determined to keep our promises'
Bangladesh Olympic Association has announced that they will hand cash rewards to the winners of the just-concluded South Asian Games in January, to fulfill their promise.
BOA Secretary General Syed Shahed Reza yesterday informed that the prize-giving ceremony will be held at a city hotel on January 11.
BOA President and Army chief General Aziz Ahmed will disburse a total Tk3.77 crore to the medal winning athletes as the chief guest. In the biggest sporting gala of the region, held in Nepal from December 1-11, Bangladesh beat their previous best by bagging 142 medals, including 19 golds, 33 silvers and 90 bronzes.
Prior to the Games, the BOA promised to award Tk6 lakh to each individual event gold winner, as well as Tk3 lakh to each silver and Tk1 lakh to each bronze medal winner. In the team events, each member of a gold medal winning side will receive Tk1 lakh, while silver and bronze winners will be awarded Tk50,000 and Tk30,000, respectively.
“We are determined to keep our promises. As soon as we will hand over our promised money to the medal-winning athletes, we believe they will be encouraged more,” Reza said at the BOA Office yesterday.
The organizer was content with the overall results at the SA Games, but also felt a little aggrieved by the failure to clinch gold medals in certain disciplines.
“We had expected to win gold medals in some disciplines such as football, swimming, shooting, wushu and boxing, but could not achieve it. However, I am not disappointed with the over-all performance, because the athletes produced our all-time best results in the SA Games,” Reza added.
