Veteran swimmer and freedom-fighter Professor Dr. Kanai Lal Sharma passed away yesterday morning at his residence of Mongolbaria, Shohortoli in Kushtia. He was 89.

Local UNO Zubair Hossain Chowdhury confirmed the news to Dhaka Tribune. Sharma left behind his wife, two sons and three daughters.

The freedom-fighter was given the guard of honour at his residence before his funeral was held in Mongolbaria Moha-shoshan where thousands of people gathered to bid him an adieu.

On 27th July, 1971, Sharma swam in a lake at Lal Dighi in West Bengal of India for 90 hours and 17 minutes, and in the process he broke the world record of longest-time swimming. The record not only enriched the annals of swimming history but also created a huge support from the swimming world for Bangladesh, the nation that was struggling for its independence.

Sharma was born in Hatsho Haripur Union’s Shaldah village in Kushtia. He was a homeopathic doctor in his professional life.
