Mabia, Smrity bag silver in Egypt

Mabia won silver in the women’s 71kg category on Wednesday by lifting a total of 180kgs, including 80kg in snatch and 100kg in clean and jerk segments

Top Bangladesh weightlifter Mabia Akter Shimanta and Smrity Akter clinched silver medals in the 5th ISSF International Solidarity Weightlifting Championship, which is taking place in Cairo, Egypt.

Mabia won silver in the women’s 71kg category on Wednesday by lifting a total of 180kgs, including 80kg in snatch and 100kg in clean and jerk segments. 

Egyptian weightlifter Rania Mohamed Ezzat won gold by lifting a total of 207kg.

Smrity’s silver came in the 45kg weight category as she lifted a total 123kgs with 55kg in snatch and 68kg in clean and jerk.

The seven-day tournament, which began Saturday with the participation of 114 athletes from 20 countries, offered an opportunity for the top performers to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Mabia, the South Asian Games 2016 gold medalist, earlier used to participate in the 64kg weight category in which she lifted 178kg during the Asian Games 2018 in Indonesia in September this year.
