Khulna emerged as the champion in the swimming categories after securing eight gold medals and as many silvers in the Bangladesh Youth Games in Dhaka Monday.
A total of 14 events, seven for boys and as many for girls, took place at Syed Nazrul Islam National Swimming Complex in Mirpur Sunday and Monday.
Dhaka became runners-up by securing six golds, six silvers and two bronzes. Dhaka’s Ariful Islam became the best swimmer in the boys’ division after achieving five golds in as many individual events. Khadiza Akhter Brishty finished as the best swimmer in the girls’ category after claiming two golds and a silver.
In the boys’ 100m freestyle, Ariful clinched first place while Chittagong’s Nurul Islam and Dhaka’s Titu Mia bagged silver and bronze respectively.
In the boys’ 100m breaststroke, Ariful became first, Hakim Rana of Dhaka finished second while Nurul emerged third.
Regarding his achievements, Ariful said, "Obviously I am feeling good after winning five golds. But there is no reason to get carried away. Because I treated this tournament as preparation for the Commonwealth Games. I want to do something good there. As for this tournament, I was confident of winning golds here."
In the boys’ 100m backstroke, Mithu Mia of Dhaka became first, Al Amin of Khulna finished second while Suruzzaman Limon of Rajshahi emerged third.
In the boys’ 200m freestyle, Ariful became first, Jamrul Mia of Dhaka finished second while Nurul emerged third.
In the girls’ 100m breaststroke, Brishty became first, Mukti Khatun of Khulna finished second while Rokeya Akhter emerged third.
In the girls’ 100m backstroke, Rupa Khatun of Khulna became first, Ria Akhter of Khulna finished second while Srabonti Akhter of Chittagong emerged third.
In the girls’ 200m freestyle, Fatema Akhter Keya of Khulna became first, Mukti Khatun of Khulna finished second while Salma Akhter of Dhaka emerged third.
