Bangladesh Army and Border Guard Bangladesh on Sunday emerged as champions in the Victory Day Wrestling Championship 2016 in the women's and men's category respectively.
The tournament was held in eight different weight categories in both the men's and women's event. Bangladesh Army clinched a total of eight medals, including four golds and as many silvers, to become champion in the women's category.
Ansar & Village Defence Party wrestlers fought closely with the champion as they won four golds and three silver medals to finish runners-up. Ansar & VDP's Sraboni Mallim and Rozina Khatun won gold in 75kilogrammes and 69kg weight category respectively.
BGB bagged a total of eight medals, including five golds, two silvers and a bronze to clinch the men's title while Bangladesh Army became runners-up with two golds, equal number of silvers and four bronzes. Bangladesh Army's Riazul won gold in the men's 125kg weight category while BGB's Abdur Rashid took home the gold in the 97kg weight category.
A total of 120 wrestlers, including 60 male and as many female participants, took part in the event. There were only four teams in the tournament and all are defence teams – Bangladesh Army, BGB, Bangladesh Police and Ansar & VDP.
