Mahfizur Rahman Sagor set a new record in the men's 200metre freestyle event in the opening day of the 28th National Swimming Championship at Mirpur Swimming Complex in the capital on Sunday.
Sagor clocked 1:58s to touch the finishing line and break the previous record that also belonged to him. The Bangladesh Navy swimmer beat second placed Faisal Ahmed of Bangladesh Army. Asif Reza of Bangladesh Navy finished third.
In the women's 200m freestyle event, Bangladesh Navy swimmer Nazma Khatun bagged the top position clocking 2:25s while Sharmin Sultana of Bangladesh Army and Lima Akter Lucky of Bangladesh Navy finished second and third respectively.
In the day's other events, Bangladesh Army swimmer Jewel Ahmed grabbed first place in the men's 200m singles medley while his team mate Romana Akter finished top in the women's 200m singles medley.
Meanwhile, the country's most prestigious swimming competition didn't take place last year due to a preparation camp for the South Asian Games. A total of 334 male and 86 female participants from 59 different teams are taking part in the three-day event that also features diving and water polo.
