Reigning champion Dhaka Mariner Youngs Club completed the registration of their players for the Premier Division Hockey League Sunday.
The Motijheel-based club roped in nine players from two other title favourites - Abahani Limited and Usha Krira Chakra. Mariner signed national goalkeeper Ashim Gope, Farhad Ahmed Shitul, Azizul Islam and Rahib Das from Abahani while the holder recruited Bangladesh striker Hasan Jubair Niloy, midfielder Naim Uddin, defender Rezaul Babu, forward Pushkor Khisa Mimo and Mahbub Hossain from Usha.
Six players from the previous squad, including experienced campaigner Mamunur Rahman Chayan, remained in the latest squad.
Guided by German head coach Gerhard Peter Rach, Mariner clinched their first-ever top-tier, premier division title two years ago to end their long 27-year wait for a domestic hockey crown.
Chayan expressed satisfaction with the club's recruitment process. He said, "I have had a long career. More often than not, negative news circulates in the media with regards to the game of hockey. Keeping that in mind, what Mariner club are doing is really incomparable.
"Last season, we became champion ahead of the likes of Abahani, Usha and Mohammedan (Sporting Club Limited), despite boasting a not so formidable squad. In order to defend the title, we have formed a strong squad this season. We will target victory in each and every single match."
The club's hockey committee chairman Mominul Haque Sayeed said, "We have tried to form the squad with the best local players. We are mulling recruiting players from Argentina, England and Australia. If we are able to do that, then Mariner will perhaps have the best and most expensive squad."
