Hockey World League Round 2: Bangladesh lose to Oman, face Egypt in last eight

Update : 07 Mar 2017, 10:00 PM
Misfiring Bangladesh went ahead twice in the game, thanks to goals from Mamunur Rahman Chayan and Romman Sarkar, but a devastating display in the second quarter put them behind. They created a number of chances in the latter half, but there was no experienced finisher inside the circle to execute them. Bangladesh's recent results against Oman are not that great but at the same time, it was the former's first defeat at home against the middle eastern nation. The defeat ensured Bangladesh finished third in Pool A, thus setting up a clash against 20th-ranked Egypt in the quarter-finals, scheduled for Thursday. Oman meanwhile, will face Ghana in the last eight. Bangladesh got their first penalty corner in the eighth minute. Ashraful Islam's final hit earned another penalty corner immediately. This time around, in the ninth minute, Imran Hasan Pintu stopped Milon Hossain's push before Chayan's powerful grounder hit the back-board. Oman equalised from a penalty stroke a minute before the first quarter when Asim Gope brought down Ashraf Nasseri inside the circle. Goalkeeper Gope was replaced by Zahid Hossain but Mohammed Bait Jandal made no mistake in scoring from the spot. Romman put the home side ahead again two minutes into the second quarter following a brilliant buildup between himself and Russel Mahmud Jimmy. Jimmy delivered a spectacular pass between the legs of an Oman defender, setting up Romman who beat the opponent custodian with an angular shot. Russel Mahmud Jimmy attacks under the watchful eyes of head coach Oliver Kurtz and assistant coach Mahbub Harun DHAKA TRIBUNEBangladesh then experienced some bad moments in the second quarter where Oman netted two quick goals to take control of the game. A minute after Muhanna al Hasani restored parity, the same player set up the next goal with a pass towards an unmarked Khalid al Batashi, who slotted home from close range in the 25th minute. In the third quarter, Arshad Hossain was unlucky to see his two-yard tap-in go wide following a fierce cross by Romman from the left side. The home side went close to scoring three times within a minute in the middle of the final quarter. But, Oman netminder Noufali Fahad saved Mainul Islam Kaushik and Sarwar Hossain's shots while Kamruzzaman Rana's strike went wide. They had the final opportunity to score from their last penalty corner three minutes before the end of stipulated time but it also went wide. Along with lack of control in midfield, the home side's players were struggling for the majority of the tie inside the opposition circle while their finishing left a lot to be desired. They felt the absence of forwards like Pushkor Khisa Mimo and Hasan Jubayer Niloy, who are proven and experienced finishers inside the d-box.RESULTSBangladesh 2 (Chayan 9, Romman 17) 3 Oman (Jandal 14, Hasani 24, Batashi 25)Malaysia 11 1 FijiChina 5 1 Sri LankaEgypt 1 (4) 1 (2) Ghana QUARTER-FINALS LINE-UPMalaysia v Sri LankaEgypt v BangladeshOman v GhanaChina v Fiji
