Italy and Argentina, the champions of recently concluded continental tournaments Euro 2020 and Copa America 2021, may vie soon for a new showpiece event dubbed as the Maradona Cup, reports Marca.
It is learnt that the two regulatory bodies of Europe and South America- UEFA and CONEMBOL- are working together to set a date for the clash of the champions.
As per reports in the New York Times, the match would be played at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Naples and be a tribute to the footballing icon who passed away last year.
Maradona's name would also be given to the trophy handed out to the winners of a game that is a tantalizing prospect, bringing together some of the top players in the world in a unique event.
The competitors of the match as well as the venue will carry legacies of the legendary Argentine as he played for Italian outfit Napoli for seven years.
The exact details of the competition remain to be confirmed, so too whether this would be a one-off homage to Maradona or if it could be the beginning of a regular Super Cup-type event featuring the winners of the European Championship and Copa America.
