Abahani, Kings win friendlies with ease

Jewel Rana scored a brace for the Sky Blues

The six-time BPL champions Abahani Limited outplayed Uttar Baridhara Club 3-0 while holders Bashundhara Kings defeated Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club 2-0 in their respective pre-season practice matches Tuesday.

Jewel Rana scored a brace for the Sky Blues before new signing, Brazilian striker Francisco Torres also got goal in his first game for the club after coming on as substitute.

Abahani started with Sultan Shakil under the sticks in the absence of injured goalkeeper Shahidul Alam. Jewel, Faisal Ahmed Shitol and Rubel Mia started up front before the latter two were replaced by Torres and Kervens Belfort after the break.

Afghan defender Masih Saighani, who rejoined Abahani after spending a season at ISL outfit Chennaiyin, played in the latter half. Mamunul Islam and Sohel Rana played in midfield before Nabib Newaz Jibon join them after break.

“It was good for the first game of the season. We still have many things to improve but we are in the right way,” said Portuguese head coach Mario Lemos.

Bashundhara’s Spanish coach Oscar Bruzon termed their performance as ‘solid game by our players’ after his charges beat Sheikh Jamal at away ground, thanks to one goal each from Brazilian midfielder Fernandes and Robinho.

The Brazilian pair started in midfield with Argentine striker Raul Becarra, wingers Matin Mia and Md Ibrahim on up front. Iranian defender Khaled Shafie partnered Yeasin Khan at center half while goalkeeper Anisur Rahman Zico captained the side.

It was Bashundhara’s fifth pre-season friendly against BPL clubs as they have played  against Uttar Baridhara, Police FC, Muktijoddha Sangsad earlier.
