Sunday, the second leading scorer in the league’s last edition with 20 goals, was struggling to find his old form since the start of the new season but the Nigerian striker proved his worth even in the absence of his Haitian attacking partner, injured Kervens Belfort, who was replaced by Jewel Rana

Sunday Chizoba showcased a very special Sunday night performance at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, as he scored four goals, the first hat-trick of the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League, to help Abahani Limited beat Muktijoddha SKC by 4-1.

Abahani’s return to winning ways after the maiden defeat against Chattogram Abahani in the last match put them at the top of the table with 13 points, equal with Chittagong Abahani, who have an inferior goal difference, from six matches.

Sunday, the second leading scorer in the league’s last edition with 20 goals, was struggling to find his old form since the start of the new season but the Nigerian striker proved his worth even in the absence of his Haitian attacking partner, injured Kervens Belfort, who was replaced by Jewel Rana.

“I was sad for getting only one goal in last five matches, so I tried and worked hard to back to form and I’m very happy today,” said Sunday after the game.

A long throw-in of Rayhan Hasan allowed Sunday head home to open the scoring in the 18th minute before doubling the lead at the hour mark after beating offside trap to collect a long ball inside the danger zone.

Mamunul Islam unleashed a spectacular left-footed volley from outside the box but Md Razib produced an even better save with a flying tip to his left.

Sunday got his hat-trick four minutes after the break heading in a deflected throw-in of Rayhan before Brazilian defender pulled one back with a close-range header in Sumon Ali delivery after the hour mark.

Four minutes before the stipulated time, Sunday completed the rout with a brilliant finish after being fed up by Nabib Newaz Jibon and dribbling past a defender at the top of the box.

There were around a hundred spectators present in the gallery despite the discouragement from the federation amid coronavirus fears which forced the BPL fixtures rescheduled and likely to resume on Thursday.

Result

Abahani 4 (Sunday 18’, 30’, 49’, 86’) – 1 Muktijoddha (Albert 63’)
