Abahani Limited kicked off the new Bangladesh Premier League campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win over new comer Bangladesh Police FC at the Bangabandhu National Stadium Sunday.

Nigerian striker Sunday Chizoba and Kyrgyzstan forward Edgar Bernhardt netted one each in the either side of the break to return to winning ways, four days after they had seen the exit door from the AFC Cup play-offs.

The Sky Blues, who thrashed the same opponents 4-0 in the Federation Cup group stage two months ago, began the game brightly as Sunday’s header in a Nabib Newaz Jibon cross went wide in the eighth minute.

Sunday tried his luck with a bullet shot from long range but the effort flew inches over. Police responded quickly from a counter within two minutes but striker Aminul Islam couldn’t keep his header on target.

Sunday finally broke the deadlock before the break after brilliantly set up by Haitian winger Kervens Belfort who danced past a couple of opponent players to feed the Nigerian and the latter slotted home calmly from the right side of the box.

It was all about Mario Lemos’s side in the second half as well. Jibon’s header deflected off in the 65th minute before Belfort was denied by the woodwork with a header after Saad Uddin’s cross in 75th minute. Police defender Khan Md Tara made a goal-line clearance to deny Sunday’s header three minutes later.

Edgar, started as right winger, scored his first goal in Sky Blue jersey with an opportunist strike in the 83rd minute after a short pass from Jibon who could have finished the job by his own.

Lemos earlier made a single change from the last AFC Cup outing against Maziya in Maldives with experienced defender Nasir Uddin Chowdhury replacing Mamunul Islam to start in defensive midfield. Center-backs Tutul Hossain Badsha and Mailson Alves put up a solid partnership to keep the fort safe.
