Bangladesh kicked off their four-nation Saff U-15 Women’s Championship 2019 campaign with a dominating 2-0 win over hosts Bhutan at the Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu yesterday.

Bangladesh, who reached the final in the tournament’s other two editions, began the game brightly and took the lead in the 22nd minute following an outstanding strike by striker Shaheda Akter Ripa.

Rehena Akhter brought down a long cross of Unnoti Khatun in front of Ripa who unleashed a right-footed volley from the penalty arch that went into the top right corner leaving Bhutan goalkeeper Normu Zangmo no chance.

Forward Rojina Akhter also scored a beautiful goal followed by a fine build-up to double the lead in the 31st minute. After a quick one-to-one with Ripa, Rojina drifted past a defender at the edge of the box before placing home past the keeper at the far post.

Rojina had another fine chance in the 57th minute but Zangmo was this time ready to deny the effort.

With the win, Bangladesh enriched their winning record against Bhutan even further. They won the group match 3-0 in 2017 edition where Bangladesh emerged champions and extended the margin to 5-0 in the same stage last year.

Bangladesh will face Nepal in their second match on Friday. India thrashed Nepal 4-1 in the inaugural game in the other match yesterday.
