This is the second time Shafiqul Islam Manik has been appointed Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited coach after 2016 when he worked for six months
Former Bangladesh defender Shafiqul Islam Manik has replaced the outgoing Joseph Afusi as the head coach of Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited.
Nigerian Afusi’s current deal expired last month and the club did not extend his contract as Sheikh Jamal are out of the top-flight title race after just 12 rounds.
The Dhanmondi club are currently seventh following the conclusion of the first phase of the Bangladesh Premier League.
This is the second time Manik has been appointed Sheikh Jamal coach after 2016 when he worked for six months.
The AFC “A” licenced coach, who previously worked as coach for Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra, Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra, Chittagong Abahani Limited and also the national side, expressed delight after taking up his new role.
“I thank the team management for placing their faith in me. My challenge now is to take this team to a respectable position in the league. Since it will not be possible to become champion or runners-up, I will try to finish as high as possible in the league table,” said Manik.
Sheikh Jamal manager Anwarul Karim Helal said, “Our deal with Afusi has come to an end. We have selected Manik Bhai in his place. Also, Argentine trainer (Ariel) Coleman is going back home.”
Afusi said the decision to leave Sheikh Jamal was a mutual one, and agreed between both parties.
He said, “The team are not in a good position. My deal is also over. That’s why, after discussions between both parties, I felt I should leave.”
