Defending champion Abahani Limited beat Brothers Union 4-0 in their Bangladesh Premier League encounter Sunday at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka.

Abahani’s Haitian striker Krevens Belfort bagged a brace while Nigerian Sunday Chizoba netted one after Brothers’ defender Uttam Kumar Roy scored an own goal to complete the rout.

With the win, Abahani’s fifth in a row, the Sky Blues ascended to the top of the points’ table with 18 points from seven matches.

However, Bashundhara Kings, who are in second spot, are just three points behind having played two matches less.

Abahani started the match with aggression and reaped rich reward in the 11th minute.

Wali Faisal received a ball in the left side from a crowded right side through a chip.

Wali provided an immaculate cross but Chizoba’s cross rebounded off the post.

However, the rebound was ricocheted off Uttam for the first goal of the game.

Abahani’s long-throw specialist Rayhan Hasan has become a regular assister this season and he did the same in the 18th minute when Belfort jumped above all to head home Rayhan’s throw to double the lead.

The Gopibag-based side got a great opportunity in the 34th minute but Abahani’s defender Tutul Hossain Badshah saved Brazilian forward Leonardo Lima’s shot from the goal line.

Nabib Newaj Jibon, the joint highest-scorer of the league with five goals, got the ball from a counter attack and unleashed a powerful shot from long range in the last minute of the first half.

Brothers goalie Sujon Chowdhury saved the shot but Chizoba was in the box to earn an easy goal off the rebound.

Rayhan’s long throw acted as an assist once again in the 57th minute.

Belfort headed the ball but this time it rebounded off an opponent defender.

However, the Haitain had the space and time to take a powerful shot that gave Abahani a 4-0 lead.

Belfort had a great opportunity of scoring a hat-trick but his chip shot over Sujon rebounded off the post.

Brothers, who now have only three points from six games, had a chance to score a consolation goal in the 87th minute but Abahani keeper saved Mannaf Rabby’s volley to ensure a clean-sheet.

Brothers 0 4 Abahani (Uttam 11-OG, Belfort 19, 57, Sunday 42)
