Nofel Sporting Club beat Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited 2-0 in the Independence Cup at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka Thursday.

Group B is now led by Chittagong Abahani Limited, who have six points, followed by Nofel with three points.

Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society and Mohammedan both have a point apiece.

Chittagong Abahani have confirmed their quarter-final berth in the second tournament of the professional football season.

Midfielder Khandakar Ashraful Islam put Nofel ahead in the 28th minute from an Ismael Bangoura pass.

Nofel could have gone 2-0 ahead in the 44th minute but midfielder Farhad Mona shot over the bar.

Mohammedan went into the break trailing 1-0 but had a golden opportunity to bring parity in the 74th minute but defender Mohammad Linkon’s shot missed the target.

The traditional Black and Whites missed another chance in the 85th minute when midfielder Pashbon Molla struck the crossbar.

Nofel made it 2-0 in injury time when midfielder Mohammad Roman found the back of the net.

Mohammedan players lost their cool after the game as they got involved in verbal clash among themselves.

The situation turned worse when Yusuf Sifat and Atiqur Rahman Meshu started fighting against each other.

The Mohammedan manager Amirul Islam Babu though diffused the situation, and separated the duo.

Nofel manager Kamal Ahmed Babu expressed happiness after the game.

He said, “We came to the field with the target of winning. We are successful in our pursuit. I hope we will get the point we need in the next match and qualify for the quarters.”
