It was another unusual day for big-spending Bashundhara Kings who made their professional debut with a thrashing 5-2 win over Mohammedan

Former champion Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited set up a quarter-final with new powerhouse Saif Sporting Club while star-studded Bashundhara Kings got an easier fixture with Team BJMC as the last two matches of the Walton Federation Cup group stage ended in stalemate at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka Tuesday.

Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited crashed out of the tournament despite holding Sheikh Jamal to a 1-1 draw while the two new promoted premier league outfits, Bashundhara and NoFeL Sporting Club played out a similar margin draw in the day’s opening game.

Both Sheikh Jamal and Bashundhara concluded the Group D fixtures with five points each, but goal-difference put the latter ahead in the points table.

The Black and Whites have earned four points.

It was another unusual day for big-spending Bashundhara who made their professional debut with a thrashing 5-2 win over Mohammedan.

They battled with NoFeL in the second tier league last season but the new squad is totally different following the signing of some key national players, along with 2018 Russia World Cup playing member Daniel Colindres of Costa Rica.

Forward Colindres got the rare opportunity to play up front and exhibit his skills, while national striker Towhidul Alam Sabuj also found it hard to penetrate the defence led admirably by Nigerian center-back duo Eleta Benjamin Jr and Michael Yonta.

It was however, the local stars who gave Bashundhara the lead in the 37th minute when midfielder Masuk Mia Joni placed home from the edge of the six-yard box following a cross of Mohammad Ibrahim from the left flank.

Khondokar Ashraful Islam brought parity in the 61st minute beating Bashundhara keeper Anisur Rahman Zico with a neat placing shot into the far post after fine build-up saw Ismael Bangoura set him up at the top of the box.

Brazilian forward Marcos Vinicius da Silva replaced Sabuj after conceding the goal but he too couldn’t change the fate of the game as NoFeL left the pitch with their first ever point earned in the professional arena.

RESULT

Bashundhara 1 (Joni 37) 1 NoFeL (Ashraful 61)
