The ceremony started at the stroke of midnight on Sunday with flowers placed around Late Sheikh Kamal’s monument in the club
Legendary Club Abahani Limited held a day-long program on Sunday to mark the 69th birthday of its founder Late Sheikh Kamal. The program was held at the club’s premises located in Dhanmondi of the capital.
The ceremony started at the stroke of midnight on Sunday with flowers placed around Late Sheikh Kamal’s monument in the club. The holy Quran was recited throughout the day in the club premises followed by ceremonial speeches in memory of Sheikh Kamal and his effort to establish sports in Bangladesh following the Liberation war in 1971.
The ceremony was chaired by the club chairman Salman F Rahman while other dignitaries of the club and Bangladesh sports fraternity were also present.
“Sheikh Kamal was a born leader and had a different personality. I am proud that he was a close friend of mine. He had a lot of friends who were businessmen after the independence of the country. Many people offered him to take commission for business purposes. But no one could lure him into any wrongdoings. He was a great man ” said Salman.
The Abahani chairman informed a proposal was made for the development of the club which will be approved soon and work will start this winter.
Abahani Limited acting director in-charge Kazi Nabil Ahmed said that though August is a month to mourn, the day is a joyous one for Abahani, because it’s Sheikh Kamal’s birthday.
“Bangladesh sports would have never progressed as much if Sheikh Kamal was not born. He was brutally killed at the age of 26 but despite his untimely death, he was able to leave a mark of his exemplary work in the sports arena. He is still a role model in Bangladesh. I believe we would have seen many glorious moments in sports if he was alive,” said Nabil, at the ceremony on Sunday.
“We are lucky that not only the club but the whole country is now being led by his elder sister, our honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Not only men but women are also progressing in sports. We hope and prayer for better success in the coming year,” the Abahani high-up added.
