All the big guns of the tournament were raring to go and to prove again to themselves and the rest of corporate Dhaka, as to who would go home with the ultimate glory
The 13th edition of the Ascent Cup kicked off with the usual fanfare and our national anthem. All the big guns of the tournament were raring to go and to prove again to themselves and the rest of corporate Dhaka, as to who would go home with the ultimate glory.
The reigning champion Comfit Composit Knit Limited started off proceedings with an 8-1 romp over Bitopi, who had nothing in reply. They still seem like the team to beat this year. Plate runners-up Neo Zipper came next and made small work of newcomer Intertek in a 6-2 mauling.
Meanwhile, Meena Sweets found the going tough against a resilient Asutex, who gave them no inch, no quarter. The match ended in a goalless draw.
Giant Green Delta Insurance, led by the courageous Nipul Barua, easily outwitted a plucky Lal Teer in a 4-1 win. An impressive Marico won easily 5-2 against an adamant Metronet. Comfit in their second match of the night proved why they are the reigning Ascent Cup champion as they trounced newcomer Fareast Finance 14-1.
Old timer Bangla Cat faced one of their old adversaries in an enthralling 5-3 victory. In the last game of the night, reigning Plate champion Sterling showed no sign of wear and tear as they took apart newbie BProperty in a 10-1 mauling.
Galaxy Group conceded a 5-2 loss against an in-form Asutex. We are expecting great things from Asutex, even though we must add that Galaxy are far more improved than last year.
Jaago put six goals past the Desh Group goalkeeper. In reply, Desh Group had nothing to show for their efforts. We are sure that Desh Group will come back stronger as the tournament progresses.
In their first match Friday, Dhaka Tribune faced a stubborn Multimode but the former prevailed in a 5-3 win. Ogilvy versus IDLC was a hard-fought match which saw the advertising company narrowly beating the leasing firm in a 3-2 win.
Debutants Northend Coffee and Intertek fought tooth and nail in a match that saw no goals. Similarly, Unilever went after MTB and just about crossed the finishing line after a 3-2 victory.
Dhaka Tribune in their second match ran riot over Euro Vigil in a 10-1 rout. Old timer Beximco Textiles and Unilever were involved in a 4-4 thriller, which saw both sides taking a point each.
A plucky Dhaka Regency held MTB as long as they could but in the end the bankers’ experience shone through as they won 2-1. Bangla Cat with their talismanic captain Arif squeezed past Chevron in a nail-biting encounter as the former won 4-2.
Home team Ascent found the going tough against current Bowl champion Bongo, who trounced them 5-0. Sterling Group continued their winning ways against Runner Group in a 9-2 hammering.
IIDFC in their first game of this year’s tournament made small work of newcomer Fakhruddin Textiles after putting eight goals past their hapless keeper. In the meantime, City Bank showed their class against BAT by defeating them 4-2.
Gemcon sent a clear statement of intent by hammering Brac Bank seven-nil. Old timer Securex kicked off the tournament destroying TVS five-nil.
