Sports themed cafés and restaurants in Dhaka are yet to fully capture the imagination of the Bangladeshi people.

However, whenever a Fifa World Cup or a Cricket World Cup comes around, the restaurants get busy promoting themselves through sports.

With the 2018 Fifa World Cup taking place in Russia, many eateries in Dhaka have planned to cash in on the craze by introducing new facilities.

The fans can enjoy delicious food and watch the game live and in this aspect, After Hours Restaurant in Dhanmondi is a bit different than any other sports themed restaurant in Dhaka.

While nearly all the restaurants are busy attracting and serving customers, After Hours has its theme based on Argentina only.

Managing director of After Hours Restaurant, Mahzabeen Rahman Shipra informed Dhaka Tribune that the plans behind the restaurant have simply been drawn up from her family’s love for the Albiceleste.

"My family is fond of sports and us cousins often get together to watch matches - let it be a cricket match where Bangladesh are playing, or any other big game of football. Most of us in the family are Argentine fans, there is only two I think who support Uruguay and Brazil," said Mahzabeen.

"One night me and my cousins were having dinner in the restaurant ahead of the World Cup when we were struck with the idea of giving the restaurant Argentina colours and arranging World Cup matches live on big screen. In most countries you will see eateries where supporters of a specific team hang around and watch the games, so we thought of doing the same," the young entrepreneur added.

In recent times, Bangladesh has had its share of aggressive supporters who attack the opposition supporters, especially on social media platforms.

In this regard, Mahzabeen stated that even though they faced criticism, it was all done in light-hearted fashion.

"In the past, there have been times when we lost customers just because the person was wearing jersey of a different team or maybe simply because they didn’t want to eat at an Argentina themed restaurant. On the positive side, we are having customers who might have easily preferred some other restaurant in the building but eventually ended up at After Hours just because of Argentina. So it is a mixture of both. There have been negative comments (not aggressive) on our social media pages. But it is what it is and we are treating it as sarcasm," Mahzabeen explained.

Mahzabeen’s cousin Safwat Yamin Shoumo has designed the restaurant. A strong Argentina fan himself, Safwat informed that the theme will remain throughout the World Cup, despite the Albiceleste's exit from the World Cup in the last 16 Saturday night.

"We had a very humble response and we want to keep it that way. After this, we have plans to bring in a Bangladesh cricket themed restaurant, and keep it that way always. Bangladesh will play many big tournaments in future, like the Asia Cup and the 2019 World Cup. So we will make sure to have arrangements where the customers can enjoy the game, along with the food," said Safwat.

After Hours has introduced a menu dedicated to Argentina footballers. One can enjoy the Burger Diego 10 or Pasta Leo 10. Pizza di Maria and Faluda the Higuain are also on offer for the food-lovers.
