Prior to Argentina’s do-or-die 2018 Fifa World Cup Group D clash against Nigeria at Saint Petersburg Stadium in Russia, the Albiceleste fans were seen in large numbers outside the venue. Hoping to qualify for the last 16, they were chanting in groups in the streets, restaurants, trams, metros and buses.
Last night, several trains landed in Saint Petersburg carrying thousands of Argentine fans. Despite the grim situation facing Argentina before the Nigeria tie, the passionate fans were still cheering their team vocally, singing one melodious chant after another while getting out of the train.
One of the songs has been listed below -
The chant was heard everywhere and the Albiceleste fans were joined at times by the other supporters.
When asked the translation of the chant, Jose German Puerdo, who came here from Argentina a day before the Nigeria game, said, “Let's go Argentina, you know that I love you, today you have to win and be the champion. This crazy fan, I leave everything for the cup. The one that has [Lionel] Messi and [Diego] Maradona.”
The fans were also seen mocking manager Jorge Sampaoli. The Albiceleste fans however, expressed optimism with regards to Argentina’s qualification to the next round.
When queried if Argentina can win against the Super Eagles, a female fan named Carolina, who came here with her husband from Santa Fe, said, “We are going to win this match. Argentina will score three goals. We know we had some bad days, but things will change this time.”
Football is not only a sport but an occasion where the fans’ colourful emotions only adds to the beauty of the game.
