Farashganj Sporting Club shocked local powerhouse Abahani Limited 1-0 on the opening day of the Walton U-18 National Football Tournament, powered by Premier Bank, at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka Thursday.
The match was all set to end in a stalemate before Rafiqul Islam intervened in the second minute of injury time to give Farashganj all three points.
In the other game of the day at the same venue, favourite Saif Sporting Club Limited were held to a 1-1 draw by Brothers Union Limited.
Fahim opened the scoring for Saif Sporting in the 12th minute before Alman brought parity in the 78th minute.
In Friday’s matches, Team BJMC will take on Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited at 3:15pm before Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited face Chittagong Abahani Limited at 5pm.
Bangladesh Football Federation senior vice-president and chairman of the professional league committee Abdus Salam Murshedy inaugurated the tournament as the chief guest while BFF general secretary Abu Nayeem Shohag was also present among others.
The U-18 players of the 12 top-flight clubs are taking part in the tournament.
The champion will receive Tk5 lakhs while the runners-up side will get Tk3 lakhs as prize money. The rest of the clubs will each pocket Tk2 lakhs as participation money.
Group A comprises Brothers, Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra and Saif Sporting while Group B contains Sheikh Jamal, Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society and BJMC. Chittagong Abahani, Arambagh Krira Sangha and Mohammedan make up Group C while Group D comprises Abahani, Farashganj and Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra.
The group stage matches will conclude next Thursday following which the quarter-finals will be held from next Friday to Monday. The semi-finals will be held on May 9 and 10 with the final scheduled to be held on May 12.
The top two teams from each group will qualify for the last eight.
