Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra confirmed the berth in the quarter-final, along with Dhaka Abahani Limited, after beating Team BJMC 2-1 in their Group C encounter in the Independence Cup at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka Saturday.
Premier league winner Abahani, who beat BJMC 2-0 Wednesday at the same venue, are currently leading the group, alongside Sheikh Russel, while BJMC crashed out of the tournament with two consecutive defeats. Sheikh Russel and Abahani face each other Thursday to determine the group champion.
Forward Mehebub Hasan Nayon gave Sheikh Russel the breakthrough in the 80th minute placing home into the far post with a left-footed curving shot. The delight however, lasted for only seven minutes when forward Mohammad Robin cancelled the lead from a penalty, sending Sheikh Russel goalkeeper Maksudur Rahman the wrong way from the spot.
Sabuj Biswas came off the bench to make an immediate impact as the midfielder sealed the winner for Sheikh Russel in the third minute of the nine-minute injury time. BJMC earlier went close to scoring at the hour-mark when versatile defender Khalekuzzaman Sabuj's free-kick from 25 yards out hit the woodwork.
Meanwhile in the day's second match, Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited and Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society played out a dull goalless draw in their Group A match. Rahmatganj will face Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited Wednesday after which the two quarter-finalists from the group will be decided. The notable attack of the game came in the 35th minute when Rahmatganj striker Rashedul Islam Shuvo's shot from a goal-mouth scramble was blocked by Mohammedan keeper Mamun Khan.
