Arch-rivals Abahani, Mohammedan face off Wednesday
The two fiercest arch-rivals in the country, holder Dhaka Abahani Limited and Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited are set to take on each other for the season's second Dhaka derby in the 14th round of the Bangladesh Premier League, scheduled to be held at Bangabandhu National Stadium Wednesday at 6:45pm. The two sides had faced each other once in the first phase of the league where the Sky Blues won the game with a solitary goal last August. Abahani also came out as winner against the Black and Whites twice in the league last season. Very little has changed in the squad of the two teams during the mid-season players' transfer window but both showed signs of strengthening their attacking options with Abahani bringing back Nigerian striker Sunday Chizoba, who was the top-scorer in the league last season while Mohammedan signed Haitian forward Augustin Walson from Brothers Union. Despite the inclusion of Walson, who is also a proven scorer in the premier league, Mohammedan failed to score any in their first two matches in the second phase, losing against Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited and Chittagong Abahani Limited. Abahani started the second phase with a 2-1 loss against Saif Sporting Club but managed to come back in the next match with a win by the same margin against Farashganj Sporting Club. The two sides faced each other 20 times in 10 years of professional league history with Abahani winning seven times and Mohammedan triumphing on four occasions. Eight encounters ended in a draw. Abahani, the five-time professional league winner, are currently third in the points table with 27 points from 13 games while Mohammedan, who haven’t won the premier league title since 2007, are sixth with 10 points less than Abahani.
