The second phase of Bangladesh Premier League gets underway Monday at 4pm with the match between reigning champion Dhaka Abahani Limited and newly promoted Saif Sporting Club at Bangabandhu National Stadium.
Abahani defeated Saif Sporting 3-2 in the inaugural match of the league on July 28 this year. The traditional Sky Blues finished the first phase at third place with 24 points from 11 matches, same as second-placed Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited, while Saif Sporting are fourth with two points less.
Saif Sporting made the best use of the mid-season players' transfer window where they roped in six new players, including former premier league star, Haitian winger Wedson Anselme and English striker Charlie Sheringham. They also bought four young footballers, including national U-16 youngster Foysal Ahmed Fahim.
Abahani made only one signing in the window, bringing back Nigerian striker Sunday Chizoba, but tall Gambian midfielder Landing Darboe had to make way. Sunday was the top-scorer in the premier league last season, netting 19 goals but failed to make it into the Abahani squad in the first phase due to injury.
Meanwhile, table-topper Chittagong Abahani Limited will take on Old Dhaka outfit, bottom-placed Farashganj Sporting Club at the same venue at 6:15pm.
Chittagong Abahani, who are currently leading the table with 26 points, will have an easier encounter against Farashganj, who earned just six points from 11 games with only a single win. The port city outfit also made only one addition during the window by bringing back Haitian forward Leonel Saint Preux.
