Rising big-budgeted sides Chittagong Abahani Limited and Saif Sporting Club played out a goalless draw in their 10th round Bangladesh Premier League match at Bangabandhu National Stadium Sunday.
The port-city outfit remained at the top of the points table despite the draw and extended their lead to six points over joint second-placed sides Dhaka Abahani Limited and Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited. Chittagong Abahani now have 26 points from 10 games while Abahani and Sheikh Jamal have played a match less.
The other game – the Dhanmondi derby - between Abahani and Sheikh Jamal, scheduled to kick off Sunday at 6:45pm, has been postponed due to the sudden demise of life-long Sky Blues coach and mentor Amalesh Sen. The match will take place Monday at the same time at BNS. The rest of the fixtures have also been bodily shifted by a day.
Newcomer Saif Sporting, who remained fourth with 19 points from 10 games, dominated the early and latter stages of the game, creating better chances than the opposition, but their misfiring forwards were unable to find the back of the net.
In the 20th minute, Chittagong Abahani's experienced winger Zahid Hossain fed the ball to his attacking teammates inside the box but Towhidul Alam Sabuj and Olawale Oladipo failed to connect properly.
A Zahid corner at the stroke of the opening half was sneaking through the top-right corner but the goalkeeper fisted away the ball to safety. In the 76th minute, Chittagong Abahani defender Mansur Amin provided a backpass to Masuk Mia Joni, who lost possession to Valencia Olaya. Olaya fired a shot from the top of the box that went straight to the onrushing keeper.
Olaya almost broke the deadlock in the 87th minute with a fine solo effort. The Colombian forward ran through the left flank, dribbled past a defender at the left flank before curving a shot that hit the woodwork.
