Holder Dhaka Abahani Limited moved to third position in the Bangladesh Premier League points table after handing a struggling Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra a comfortable 2-0 defeat in the eighth round match at Bangabandhu National Stadium on Monday.
After the opening half ended goalless, courtesy a fine display from Muktis goalkeeper Uttam Barua, the Sky Blues managed to penetrate the opponent’s terrain with goals from defender Nasir Uddin Chowdhury and substitute midfielder Landing Darboe.
The victory helped the Dhanmondi giant leapfrog rising powerhouse Saif Sporting Club to third with 17 points from eight matches.
They are now two points behind second-placed Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited, who have played a game less.
For Muktijoddha, it was their fifth defeat in a row and the All Reds remained ninth with six points from the same number of outings.
Uttam made a brilliant save in the third minute, punching away Saad Uddin’s effort from the middle of the box, following Rubel Mia’s low cross from right side.
Uttam produced another big save two minutes later when he blocked Emeka Darlington’s shot from the edge of the box.
Abahani went close again in the 14th minute and this time around, Nabib Newaj Jibon saw his header fly inches over the bar following a corner from Emon Babu.
Nasir finally gave Abahani the lead seven minutes into the second half.
The veteran defender received a long ball from Waly Faisal calmly in the middle of the box before slotting home past Uttam.
The tall Gambian Darboe, who replaced Emeka in the second half, doubled the lead in the 80th minute heading home a cross from Rubel.
Sheikh Jamal and Saif Sporting will take on each other on Tuesday while Farashganj Sporting Club and Arambagh Krira Sangha will lock horns in the day’s other match at BNS.
