Sheikh Jamal, Rahmatganj share spoils
Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited’s three-match winning run came to an end after the former champion played out a 1-1 draw against Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society in the Bangladesh Premier League at the muddy Bangabandhu National Stadium on Sunday. Gambian forward Momodou Ba put the Dhanmondi outfit ahead in the middle of the opening half before defender Asif Hossain Rimon made things all square for the Old Dhaka outfit within a minute. Sheikh Jamal’s position in the points table didn’t change as they remained second with 10 points from four matches, two behind leader Chittagong Abahani Limited.

Following the draw, Rahmatganj moved to third with seven points. Holder Dhaka Abahani Limited have the same number of points but Rahmatganj are ahead courtesy a superior goal difference. The Dhanmondi club initiated the first attack in the 19th minute when Momodou broke into the right side of the penalty area, marked closely by Monday Osagie, and the Nigerian defender produced a brilliant last-ditch tackle to stop Momodou’s dangerous run. Momodou gave Sheikh Jamal the breakthrough in the 21st minute. The Gambian forward fooled his marker after receiving a defence-splitting lob from the veteran Enamul Haque, cut inside the goalkeeper before placing home into an empty net. The delight did not last long however, as Rahmatganj defender Asif Hossain Rimon equalised within a minute. A Naimur Rahman Shahed corner was headed down by Guinean striker Ismael Bangoura, which Enamul failed to clear, before Rimon tapped home from three yards.

Solomon King squandered a big chance a minute later when the Gambian forward shot wide from just outside the six-yard box. In the 53rd minute, Mohammad Elias saw his effort from the left side of the penalty area fly inches over the top-right corner following a Naimur pass. The game saw referee Jalal Uddin dish out seven yellow cards, including four to Rahmatganj. Meanwhile, Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited will be looking forward to clinching their first points in the league this season when the Black and Whites face Farashganj Sporting Club in their fourth match on Monday.
