2017 Walton Federation Cup: Mohammedan, Jamal face off in last eight Wednesday

Traditional crowd-puller Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited and former champion Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club will take on each other in the first quarter-final of 2017 Walton Federation Cup at Bangabandhu National Stadium on Wednesday at 6pm.

Sheikh Jamal do not boast a big-budgeted and star-studded squad any more like they used to before but they have showed recently that they are finding their best form once again. They outclassed Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra to reach the last eight as group champion.

Like Sheikh Jamal, Mohammedan have not been in the best of form in recent times but they have formed a decent squad compared to last season. They beat neighbour Arambagh Krira Sangha in the group stage to get a quarter berth.

The Black and Whites crashed out of the group stage in the last edition of the Federation Cup without a single win to their name. The Dhanmondi club reached the quarter-finals last year but lost to Arambagh in the tie-breaker. The two sides faced each other twice in the Bangladesh Premier League last season where Mohammedan won the first leg with the second leg ending in a draw.

Both the sides made changes in the position of head coach from last season with Mohammedan bringing in Indian veteran tactician Syed Naeemuddin and Sheikh Jamal roping in the club’s former Nigerian coach Joseph Afusi.
