Fakirapool Young Men’s Club got promoted to top-flight football for the first time in history after beating Kawran Bazar Pragati Sangha 2-1 in a thrilling encounter in the Bangladesh Championship League at Bangabandhu National Stadium on Friday.
The Fakirapool outfit also became the first team from the second tier to secure promotion to the 10th edition of the Bangladesh Premier League with one more round left to play.
The top two finishers in the Bangladesh Championship League are meant to be promoted and Fakirapool confirmed one spot. Newly-formed Saif Sporting Club are most likely to be the other promoted side.
With Friday's hard-fought victory, Fakirapool leapfrogged Saif SC at the top of the points table with a one-point lead. They now have 24 points after the end of the 13th round while Saif SC are second with 23 points. Third-placed Agrani Bank Sporting Club have 20 points.
Saif SC and Agrani Bank SC will take on each other in their last match of the competition on Sunday. A draw would be enough for the former to achieve promotion while Agrani have no other options but to win.
Fakirapool face Chittagong Mohammedan in the competition’s last game this Monday.
Back to the game, Fakirapool fell behind in the 23rd minute when Mohiuddin opened the scoring for Kawran Bazar. Mahbubur Litu equalised the margin in the 40th minute before Jewel netted the winner a minute before the end of stipulated time.
Jewel received his second yellow card just after the winning goal to reduce his side to 10 men in injury time.
Meanwhile in the day’s other match, Victoria Sporting Club thrashed Chittagong Mohammedan 4-0 after a brace from Ariful Rahman. Chittagong Mohammedan moved solely to the bottom of the table following the defeat.
