This is the first time Austro-Hungarian head coach George Kottan has won a premier league title in Bangladesh. The former Bangladesh tactician also guided Abahani Limited in the previous season. A season later, the veteran coach’s experience and coaching style, along with Abahani’s quality and depth in the squad, proved to be crucial as the Sky Blues clinched the Federation Cup and Bangladesh Premier League titles, that too unbeaten.
“It came through many hard works. It was a long way. We didn’t lose any match. I think we have seven draws and the rest are wins. It is a good team as I always said. After hard work of seven months, this is the success. Good team and a good coach,” Kottan referred to himself, sporting a cheeky smile, after Abahani sealed the top-flight title at Bangabandhu National Stadium on Monday.
“We have one game more. We never lost any game. We have to continue it. It is a big deal to win both the Federation Cup and the Premier League unbeaten.
“It was not easy. We lost the best scorer in the league - Sunday [Chizoba] and best playmaker Lee [Andrew Tuck]. These two players are the key men in Abahani’s double winning season. We missed the two important players [Monday].”
Kottan though went on to express a tinge of disappointment as only around 1,000 spectators witnessed Abahani's title win.
“This is stupid. Look at the system, everyday two games; who will have interest after 10 days? Nobody. Must change the system in Bangladesh,” he said.
