Abahani Limited claimed their fifth professional league title with a game in hand after outplaying Uttar Baridhara Club 4-0 in the 21st round of the Bangladesh Premier League at Bangabandhu National Stadium on Monday.
Jonathan Daid, Nabib Newaj Jibon, Emon Mahmud and Faisal Mahmud netted one apiece to give the unbeaten Sky Blues a comfortable win.
Rising powerhouse Chittagong Abahani were held to a 1-1 draw by Muktijoddha SKC in the first match, paving the way for the traditional crowdpullers to confirm their first premier league title in four seasons. It was Abahani’s second silverware this season after their Federation Cup triumph.
In the league of two phases and 11 teams, the Dhanmondi giant earned 49 points from 21 matches without losing a single match while nearest opponent Chittagong Abahani have 44 points from the same number of outings as the Sky Blues.
Abahani won one and drew the other against their namesake meaning they had the advantage of head-to-head and a point against Uttar Baridhara would have been enough for them to confirm the most prestigious title. Rather, they did it in some style by clinching their second biggest margin of victory in the league this season.
The last time Abahani won a professional football league title was back in the 2011-12 season when they had to toil hard to win the crown by only one point against Muktijoddha. Since the introduction of the professional football league in 2007, Abahani have bagged a hattrick of professional league titles in the first three seasons.
George Kottan’s side kicked off strongly this season having formed a balanced and experienced squad. They reached the final of the Independence Cup before clinching the Federation League title. They were unbeaten throughout the league.
