Chittagong Abahani cut the gap down to two points with table-toppers Abahani Limited at the top of the Bangladesh Premier League standings after beating Rahmatganj MFS comfortably 2-0 at MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong on Sunday.
Bhutanese striker Chencho Gyeltshen put the home side ahead in the 22nd minute before midfielder Mamunul Islam doubled the lead in the 70th minute of the tie to help the side return to winning ways following their defeat against holders Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club last week.
Rahmatganj, who finished the first phase at the summit, continued their inconsistent run in the second phase as they have collected only one point in their three matches so far. They remained fourth with 26 points from 17 matches.
Rising powerhouse Chittagong Abahani, in the meantime, consolidated their position at second with 34 points from the same number of outings. Leaders Abahani are two points ahead of them with a game in hand.
Meanwhile in the day's other match at the same venue, Feni Soccer Club registered their first victory in the second phase of the league after edging Uttar Baridhara Club 1-0 in the bottom-of-the-table clash.
It was Feni's first win after a winless run of 10 matches, spanning more than three months. These three vital points helped them to move out of the relegation zone courtesy goal difference. Their last victory came against the same opponents in the first phase on August 19.
After a barren first half, Chowmrin Rakhaine netted the all-important goal three minutes into the second half. Chowmrin also scored against Uttar Baridhara in the first leg.
Both the sides have the same number of points - 13 from 17 matches - but an inferior goal difference meant Uttar Baridhara are mired at the foot of the table.
